Hebiatrics
Adolescence is a stage of human development characterized as a period of deep transformations, when values and atitudes are thought over and consolidated, thus requiring specific attention and language for this stage, which is utterly meaningful for one's life. At this stage, the adolescent usually feels like an adult and sad whenever he is treated like a child. At the same time, he feels distressed because he feels like a child and is expected to display an adult-like behavior.
The Greek word 'hebe' means 'youth'. Thus, HEBIATRICS is concerned with the study of youth and, therefore, Odontohebiatrics guides and introduces the adolescent, from 10 to 20 years old, into an educacional and preventive and healing program whenever necessary, focused on aesthetic and cosmetic aspects that are very praised at this stage in life.
Strengthening these ideas, the work with the adolescent doctors corroborates the efforst endeavored by other knowledge fields, by acting as health professionals and educators at the same time. You should also bear in mind that because we are dealing with an age group which presents singular traits, we need to make use of the support and guidance of other specialties.
It is worth mentioning to the hebiatrists and parents that ours is an active supporting role in this process, taking into consideration that both directions and support are very valuable at this stage, because we will be contributing toward raising a healthy generation, on the widest sense of the word.
Dentistry focused on the adolescent requires more than technical and scientific knowledge, because it deals with a person undergoing intense biological, social and psychological transformations, which demands from dental surgeons good mental and emocional stability.
It is worth noting that, in order to make those patients more sensitive, we have to develop a specific language approach and properly address their wishes. We need to respect their specific needs, regarding their own language, behavioral transformations, in adition to stimulating a health promotiong model associated with the valorization of the smile.
Dental treatment is based on prevention initiatives, by stimulating the rational employment of nontraumatic techniques on cavity removal, followed by clinical treatment and smile valorization, by means of aesthetic and cosmetic techniques, and dental embelishment.
